In normal individuals, TRH has no influence on pituitary hormone secretion other than on TSH and on prolactin secretion. It can, however, stimulate release of ACTH in patients with Cushing's synndrome; and GH in acromegalics (Fig. 1.14).
The ΓÇÿparadoxicalΓÇÖ GH response is a useful indicator of acromegaly (occurring in 70% of patients) and of the state of remission after therapy. TRH also releases GH in some patients with depression.
